Lyrics
Take It Easy

I took a little day trip, found myself in France

Heard that stuff about the Paris gals and thought I’d take a chance.

Wound up in a sidewalk bar, turning a lady’s head

When she agreed to go with me, why to myself I said:

“Don’t you know, didn’t you go, if you give me half a chance

I’ll be back on a steamboat, mama, gonna make it back to France.

Well, you gotta take it easy, but you take it, if you’re gonna find romance.”

All you need is a couple of drinks, that’s what the lady said

All you gotta have is a “verre” or two of wine, and you’re much more fun in bed.

I was young and inexperienced, but I gave her my all.

I woke up with an aching head and read this note on the wall:

“Don’t you know, I had to go, I swear I give you half a chance

Well, you take it easy, but you take it,

That’s the way we do it in France.

Well, you gotta take it easy, but you take it

If you gonna find romance.”

I learned a lesson or two that night

Several the next day

Like how a man should carry himself when he goes far away.

In spite of it all I’m happy

You can call me a crazy fool

But I got a lesson or two that night

I could never have got at school.

Don’t you know, don’t you know

You gotta take the chance

I’m going back on the steamboat, mama,

Gonna make it back to France.

Well, you gotta take it easy, but you take it

If you’re gonna find romance.

If you’re gonna find ro’

If you’re gonna find ro’

If you’re gonna find romance.

Maddy Dances

Doesn’t it move you just a little bit?

And if you watch I think the chance is

That it will lift your heart a little bit

Ooh, well I mean, when Maddy dances

Ooh, well I mean, when Maddy dances.

And when she turns her head a little bit

Don’t you just love them side-long glances

Surely she lifts your heart a little bit?

Ooh, well I mean, when Maddy dances.

Ooh, well I mean, when Maddy dances.

Clear the stage just a little

And let the lady move around.

Play the right kind of music

To get her one inch off of the ground.

Look at her stepping sure and lightly

Ooh, I do swear you must be sleeping

If it don’t lift your heart just slightly

Ooh, well I mean, when Maddy’s dancing.

Ooh, well I mean, when Maddy’s dancing.

Clear the stage just a little

Now let that lady move around.

Play the right kind of music

To get her one inch off of the ground.

Look at her stepping sure and lightly

I do swear you must be sleeping

If she don’t lift your heart just slightly

Oh, well I mean, when Maddy’s dancing.

Oh, well I mean, when Maddy’s dancing.

Maginot Waltz

All off to Brighton in a charabanc

Albert played his banjo and how we sang.

The beer was expensive but the laughter was free

Oh how we do love to all be beside the sea.

Albert had a cousin named Marjorie

And I had been noticing that she had noticed me.

I quickly decided if she didn’t mind it

I would spend the day in her gay company.

We shared a plate of whelks strolling side by side.

I said she weren’t too old to take a donkey ride

But I didn’t mind when she laughed and said no

So we paused for a while and listened to the minstrel show.

There was a notice at the Palace Pier

It said there was to be a dance that night and it wasn’t dear.

I explained of course that I could only waltz

And so we waltzed to every tune and air.

Nine o’clock come round we had to take the charabanc

And Albert was too drunk to play the banjo but still we sang

All except Marjorie, I could tell at a glance

Because me and Albert was leaving for France.

I said we’ll both be home in a week or two

Me and Albert and Lord Kitchener will teach the Hun a thing or two.

I’m sure to return, after me do not yearn

And we will waltz together all our lives through.

Sweet Mystery

One of these days I'm gonna do it right,

Take her out to dine by candle light.

Rent a suit, and give my shoes a shine,

And talk about nothing, over a glass or two of expensive

One of these days I'll do it right,

Get to her door and just say goodnight.

Even if she asks me to come in

I'll make myself say no so I can call again.

But babe, I really, really like you.

There's nothing wrong with you, no, no,

I said babe, there's nothing that is wrong with me.

I just got to have you for my sweet mystery.

Sweet mystery, sweet mystery,

Nothing wrong with you, nothing wrong with me.

Don't you see how groovy it could be

If you'd agree to be my sweet old mystery.

One of these days I'm gonna do it right,

Send her some flowers and ask her out tomorrow night.

Find a little place where maybe we could dance

And build it up slow for the big romance.

One of these days I'm gonna do it right,

If I don't get stoned in the candle light.

Get to her door and scream “Now you let me in”

Cos if she said yes, that’d be the same old thing.

Oh, babe, I really, really like you.

There's nothing wrong with you, no, no,

I said babe, there's nothing that is wrong with me.

I just want to have you for my sweet mystery.

Sweet mystery, sweet mystery,

Nothing wrong with you, nothing wrong with me.

Don't you see how groovy, well, it could be

If you'd agree to be my sweet old mystery.

Stuff No More

I told you several times before

Too many nights I spent walking the floor

I can’t take that stuff no more

I can’t take that stuff no more

Too many nights of walking the floor

I must have told you ‘bout a thousand times before

I won’t take that stuff no more.

Me and Uncle Danny we sure felt fine

Since Uncle Ivor went and fetched us some wine

I can’t take this stuff no more

I can’t take that stuff no more

It’s been too many nights of walking the floor

I told you ‘bout a thousand times or more

I can’t take that stuff no more.

Uncle Willie told me before he died

“Treat your woman good she won’t ever crucify ya.”

Take that stuff no more

You gotta take that stuff no more

It’s been too many nights you spent walking the floor

You tell her a thousand times before

That, no, you won’t take that stuff no more.

I told you several times before

Too many nights of walking the floor

I can’t take this stuff no more

I won’t take that stuff no more

Too night nights of walking the floor

I told you ‘bout a thousand times before

I can’t take that stuff no more.

Run, Johnny, Run

Well, it’s over the wall and across the yard

Till he was on the other side

And the cold night air upon his brow

And he commenced to run under the cover of night.

And he never knew he could run so fast

As the cold night air burned in his chest

And his steps faster than his beating heart

And gracious moon to light his way.

And it’s run, Johnny, run

Run, Johnny, run

You better run, Johnny, run into the light

Of the rising moon.

And the briars and the brambles tore his skin

And there’s times he fell down but got up again

And his steaming breath in the starry dark

He was straining his ears for the guard dogs’ noise.

And that’s why he run through that icy stream

For to throw them dogs from off of his scent

And although he knew it would slow him down

Well they would not know which way he’d gone.

And it’s run, Johnny, run

Run, Johnny, run

You better run, Johnny, run into the light

Of the sinking moon.

The sun arose in the eastern sky

He stole some clothes from a farmer’s line

And the shivering damp in the morning light

He hid his overalls right there.

Bright morning air for to fill his lungs

And he run to the tune that in his heart sung

And it’s easier now his way to find

Though easier too for them behind.

So you’d better run, Johnny, run

Run, Johnny, run

You better run, Johnny, run into the light

Of the sinking sun.

Run, oh, run, oh, keep on running

Till the moon and no one can find you, Johnny boy.

As the sun collapsed in the western sky

And hung with the world twixt night and day

But a misty moon had begun to climb

And with each tired step a new star shone.

And it’s run, Johnny, run

You gotta run, Johnny, run

You better run, Johnny, run

Into the light of the rising moon.

Run, oh, run, oh, keep on running

Till the moon and no one can find you, Johnny boy.

Zig Zag Line (For Sam May)

Me and my son a hill we climbed

So steep we took a zig zag line

And it was such a long, long, long and a happy climb

That zig zag line.

Sometimes when I feel him slip

He would just increase his grip

A bit upon my hand.

Me and my son on top of a hill

Breathing hard in the air so still

It was such a long, long, long and a happy climb

That zig zag line.

He looked at me and I looked at him

Both of us began to grin

You know we laughed out loud.

We gathered stones and built a ring

Big enough to dance around in

And it was such a long, long, long and a happy climb

That zig zag line.

Him and me oh, way up high

Building circles in the sky

And a-hollering songs.

Me and my son on top of a hill

Laughing out loud in the air so still

And we had had such a long, long and a happy time

That zig zag line.

Time to go, and we both grinned

He took my hand and he knew me

You know I knew him.

Let Me Down Easy

How can I say it?

It’s just something I feel from way down inside

So hard to begin to try to explain it

But something’s gone wrong, you’re unable to hide.

Let me down easy, baby.

Be so kind as to let me down slow.

Let me down easy, baby.

It’s so hard to let go.

We are not drifting,

Not with one of us still left holding the line.

And the wind has moved you, set your sails lifting

Blows cold on the one who got cut loose behind.

How can I say it?

Just something I know from way down inside.

No use for you to try to conceal it

It’s enough for me to know that you tried.

Let me down easy, darling.

Be so kind as to let me down slow.

Let me down easy, darling,

It’s so hard to let go,

So hard, so hard to let go.

Would I Lie to You?

When I feel good I think I could live forever.

When I get down I know someday I'll die.

The thing babe that I'm trying to put together

I'm happy with you and without you I sigh.

I'm happy with you and without you I cry

I'm happy with you and without you I wanna die.

Hey babe it is so hard to believe it

You must try to believe it could be true

And maybe this can come about halfway near it

Tell me the truth now would I lie to you,

Tell me the truth now would I lie to you,

Tell me the truth now I can’t lie to you.

Maybe it's wrong of me to say

The way I feel about you

But what’s the point in me to tell you lies about it.

Babe, I'm sad without you.

Hey babe don't look so surprised to hear it.

You must try to believe it could be true

And maybe these words can come about halfway near it.

Tell me the truth now would I lie to you,

Tell me the truth now I can’t I lie to you,

Tell me the truth now would I lie to you.

Maybe it's wrong of me to say

The way that I feel about you

But what’s the point in me to tell you lies about it?

Babe, I'm sad without you.

Hey, baby, I’m so glad I found you

Is it so hard to believe that could be true?

All I wanna do is keep my loving arms around you

I say, tell me the truth now would I lie to you

Tell me the truth now I can’t lie to you (I wouldn’t do it)

Tell me the truth now would I lie to you (you know I couldn’t do it)

Tell me the truth now would I lie to you.

Summer Lightning

Move over here

Come on, sit down beside me

Oh closer now

Come and put your arms, put your arms around me

Oh you had a bad day too

And I feel the same as you.

Come on, sit down.

It’s just that when I get mad

I end up saying things

If I thought about I wouldn’t ever say

And I think that you already know that

But I’ll say it anyway.

Oh, I’ll say it anyway.

It’s just that when I get mad

I end up saying things

If I thought about I wouldn’t ever say

And I think that you already know that

But I’ll say it anyway.

Oh, I’ll say it anyway.

Don’t let the day go down

The two of us still fighting

It’s not a storm at all

No it’s only summer, only summer lightning

And we still got the night

So there’s time to put it right

Let’s go to bed.

Bonus Track on CD

Teacher, Teacher

And my dad says, “At school you were protected

At college you neglected to open up your eyes and look around you,

And you don’t know nothing at all.”

Teacher, teacher, when will it reach ya

The writing on the outside wall

If you gained all your knowledge

From books you read in college

Then you don’t know nothing

Nothing at all.

And my dad says “That nothing could be finer

Than to be taught by a miner

Blinking in the light of the bright classroom

And you don’t know nothing at all.”

Teacher, teacher, when will it reach ya

The writing on the outside wall

If you gained all your knowledge

From books you read in college

Then you don’t know nothing

Nothing at all.

And my dad says “That you couldn’t name the classes

Who breathed upon your glasses.

And made you miss the writing on the outside wall

And you don’t know nothing at all.”

Teacher, teacher, when will it reach ya

The writing on the outside wall

If you gained all your knowledge

From books you read in college

Then you don’t know nothing

Nothing at all.

Teacher, teacher, when will it reach ya

Who you are just teaching us for

If you gained all your knowledge

From books you read in college

Than you don’t know nothing, nothing at all.

Teacher, teacher
